About this Course
Explore how graphic novels illuminate questions of democracy, diversity, and social change through stories of movement—across borders, through time, and within the imagination.
Through award-winning works of graphic storytelling, this course examines movement in its many forms: forced migration and immigration, political and social movements, and journeys shaped by memory and identity. Using the unique, multimodal nature of graphic novels, you’ll analyze how image and text work together to tell complex, layered stories.
As you read, discuss, and reflect, you’ll explore how pluralistic thinking—across culture, environment, and sex and gender—can deepen understanding and contribute to a more just and inclusive society. Along the way, you’ll build skills in critical analysis, interpretation, and discussion while engaging with perspectives that challenge and expand your own.
This First-Year Experience course also supports your transition to college by strengthening your ability to think critically, communicate clearly, and engage thoughtfully with the world around you.
