Principia College has selected Rafa Ascencio García as its 2026–27 Lincoln Academy Student Laureate, recognizing his leadership and service. Ascencio García was selected through a campus-wide nomination process from a group of highly qualified student nominees. The annual honor recognizes one outstanding senior from each four-year degree-granting institution in Illinois.
“I’m honored to receive this recognition and grateful for the opportunities I’ve had at Principia to learn, grow, and contribute to the community,” said Ascencio García. “This award reminds me that leadership is about how we support others and use what we learn to pursue a better future for all. This recognition is not only the result of my own efforts; it is also a reflection of the support and guidance I have received from my family, friends, and mentors.”
The Lincoln Academy of Illinois presents the Abraham Lincoln Civic Engagement Award to students who demonstrate excellence in curricular and extracurricular activities, along with a commitment to civic engagement, leadership, and service to others. Each Student Laureate receives a medallion, a certificate of achievement, and a monetary award.
“Rafa’s selection as a Lincoln Academy Student Laureate reflects the kind of thoughtful, service-minded leadership we hope to cultivate at Principia College,” said College President Meggan Madden. “We’re proud to see his contributions recognized through this distinguished honor. Rafa exemplifies the potential of our students to put their education into action and make a meaningful difference in their communities and beyond.”
