Who do you see as "the other"? And when have you been the other yourself?
500 people. 30 countries. One journey.
For nearly a quarter century, Daniel Epstein has traveled to more than 30 countries, photographing 500 people and interviewing each about their spiritual journey. Put side by side, their portraits make a quiet argument: all of us are on the same journey, and there is no "other."
Rev. Gina Alicea, director of the Corvus Gallery at the University of Chicago Laboratory Schools, found Daniel's work through his website and book and brought it to her students. That became Seeing the Other, which premiered in Chicago in 2023 and went on to a 10-month run at the Muhammad Ali Center in Louisville.
Now it comes to Principia, on view throughout the fall and celebrated on the opening night of our interfaith conference.

About the Artists
Daniel is a photographer and the founder of the Portraits in Faith project. For 25 years, he has photographed and interviewed people across 30 countries about their spiritual lives, with one aim: to show that everyone is on the journey together.
Rev. Gina is director of the Corvus Gallery at the University of Chicago Laboratory Schools and curator of Seeing the Other. She brought Daniel's portraits into the classroom and built the exhibition's educational program around them.
