Report to a Professor, Coach, RC, or Any Staff
If talking to someone you already trust feels easier, you can report to faculty or staff.
Note: All faculty and staff, except the Confidential Advisor, are mandatory reporters, which means they are required to share what you tell them with the Title IX Coordinator. The Coordinator will reach out to make sure you are safe, explain your rights and options, and to offer supportive measures. Reporting to the Title IX Coordinator does not mean you have begun a formal investigation or resolution process. It simply enables you to access information and support.
Report Online
You can report online. Identifying information is optional, but Principia’s ability to investigate and offer support may be limited if the report is anonymous.
Talk to Someone Confidentially
The Confidential Advisor isn’t required to report to police, security, the Title IX Coordinator, or the administration. Aside from narrow safety-related exceptions, what you share stays private. The Confidential Advisor isn’t a counselor but is trained to listen, explain your options, and connect you with resources.

Formal or Informal/Alternative Resolution
If you report an incident, you have options for how to proceed:
Informal/Alternative Resolution: This option requires all parties to agree to participate voluntarily. It may include facilitated dialogue, mediation, or other approaches that don’t involve an investigation. It is designed to address harm and reach a mutual agreement or resolution without a formal investigation, finding of responsibility, or sanctions. Alternative resolution is not appropriate for every case. Any party, including the college, can stop participating at any time and move to the formal process.
Formal Resolution: A trained investigator conducts a prompt, thorough, fair, and impartial investigation and gathers information and evidence from parties and witnesses. A trained hearing panel then determines responsibility, using a “preponderance of the evidence” standard (more likely than not). If a policy violation is determined, possible outcomes range from education and written reprimands to no-contact measures, academic consequences, suspension, or dismissal.
Both the reporting and responding party have equal rights throughout the process, including the right to:
- Access supportive measures
- Be notified of the allegations
- Share evidence and identify witnesses
- Review and comment on the investigation results
- Receive a timely written outcome
- Appeal the decision
- Bring a support person of your choice to any meeting
Confidentiality
Shared information is limited to safety concerns and individuals who “need to know” in order to facilitate a related process, outcome, or supportive measure. All parties are encouraged not to discuss the case publicly during an investigation or hearing.
Amnesty for Reporting
If you were violating the Code of Conduct when the incident happened, disclosing it in good faith as a reporting party or witness won’t result in sanctions. Don’t let fear of getting in trouble stop you from getting help.
Retaliation Prohibited
Anyone who reports or participates in an investigation, hearing, or other resolution process is protected from retaliation. Retaliation is a serious policy violation and may result in separate sanctions regardless of the case outcome.
