
Principia College is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Meggan Madden as College President, following her outstanding service as Interim President. Dr. Madden previously served as Dean of Academics at Principia College from 2019–2025, advancing Principia’s academic vision during a period of transformation.
Drawing on over two decades of experience in higher education, Dr. Madden has demonstrated exceptional leadership in advancing institutional excellence. Her career reflects a proven dedication to strengthening academic programs while enriching the overall student experience. With a background that includes international education, admissions, academic program assessment and design, student success initiatives, and cross-disciplinary research collaboration, she is well equipped to guide Principia College with clarity and strategic direction.
“Dr. Madden combines curiosity, integrity, spiritual strength, and a clear sense of purpose in her leadership,” said Principia Chief Executive Barbara Blackwell. “Her steady, forward-thinking approach will strengthen the College’s academic vitality and long-term success.”
Dr. Madden holds a BA from Principia College and earned both her master’s and PhD in higher education and comparative, international, and development education from the University of Toronto. Her research centers on global higher education policy and the student experience, with a particular emphasis on access, equity, and quality assurance.
Prior to returning to Principia as Dean of Academics, Dr. Madden held administrative and faculty positions at Arizona State University, George Washington University, and the Middlebury Institute of International Studies. She has also served in leadership roles within the Comparative and International Education Society, acted as executive editor of the Journal of Comparative and International Higher Education, and co-chaired the UNESCO Chair in International Education for Development at George Washington University. In addition, she served on numerous doctoral dissertation committees, mentoring emerging scholars and advancing thought leadership in the field. Dr. Madden continues to mentor students and early-career professionals, fostering critical thinking, global awareness, and effective communication in the next generation of educators and leaders.
During her time as Dean of Academics at Principia, Dr. Madden established a new academic vision, reimagining the curriculum into five interdisciplinary Academic Centers that debuted this fall. A lifelong champion of educational access, Dr. Madden is dedicated to cultivating an inclusive academic community defined by innovation and impact. The success of the new Academic Centers is a testament to her visionary leadership and ingenuity.
