Meet Damir Conci: Rugby Champion, Musician, All-American

If you haven’t already heard about him, Damir Conci (C’25) is an achiever. He’s currently the College Student Body President, an Academic All-Conference scholar-athlete, Resident Assistant, musician, and his latest achievement—voted National Collegiate Rugby’s D1 All-American—twice! As a senior flyhalf for the Thunder Chickens, Conci is a dynamic fusion of earned excellence, talent, and the exceptional support system he's found at Principia College.

Originally from Argentina, Conci’s rugby career began at the age of six, eventually taking him to Croatia to play internationally before arriving at Principia. His goal in coming to Principia was to help elevate the former Division II rugby program to Division I. Under the leadership of coaches Ward Patterson (C’82), and Philip Kellerman, Conci’s commitment to the team’s growth and his incredible work ethic helped accomplish the move to Division I, while grabbing the 2022 Division II National Championship along the way.

For Conci, a four-year captain, helping to build a thriving rugby team was bigger than just wins and losses. His goal was to help forge and foster a new team culture. He said, “When we lost, that was when we grew the most. We’d learn, we’d get back up, and we’d push harder. It was the tough times that brought the team closer.”

Conci, who is considered one of the top players in the nation, said, “I came to Principia to make a difference, not just for myself, but for the future of the team—and we did it. The All-American recognition came along the way, but the real goal was to help build something sustainable for the next generation.”

The incredible support system Principia offers —academically, artistically, and athletically— underscores Conci’s achievements. He shared that Principia has opened new doors for him in guitar, piano, and other passions he’s explored, “Here, you’re not just a number. I always say that Principia is a place to try new things. If you want to change your major, check out music, or anything else you’re interested in, you can do that. Principia gives students that opportunity. Here they build you up for success.”

With two internships under his belt as Manager of Operations with National Collegiate Rugby, Conci’s future is full of possibilities. He has the option to continue his rugby career professionally, and with his degree in economics, business administration, and political science, he’s also set to bring his leadership skills into the world of sports management.

But for now, Conci is soaking up his final season at Principia. “This semester is all about fun and reconnecting,” he said with a grin. “The team is good. We have good players. Let's just go to the field and have some fun.” And with that mindset, there’s no doubt that Conci will continue to bring his energy, his heart, and his two All-American awards into whatever comes next.
