Program Summary

Being Human focuses on a central part of human experience—living in relationship with others. We will consider what it takes to flourish as individuals in a community. We will explore practical and theoretical questions such as “How can we listen to really hear each other’s needs?” “How can we develop authentic and trusting relationships?” “How should we treat each other?” and “Do we have different duties to people depending on our relationship to them?” This FYE will raise your level of self-awareness as well as your compassionate understanding of others. We believe this increase in empathy raises your potential and those you affect.

PHIL 220: Introduction to Ethics (3 SH, GEH) will explore what we owe each other as humans, and how to live well, or flourish. We will discuss a wide range of ethical theories and what they say about the nature of value and right/wrong action. These theories offer answers to central human questions like “How should I live?” and “What is the right thing to do?”

EDST 260: Interpersonal Communication (3SH GESS) will explore verbal and nonverbal communication. Through this experience, you will be introduced to how your body language affects others and how active listening improves relationships. By taking the time to listen and to hear what other people are saying without judgment, you will develop authentic connection and build trust.

GEN 101 BH: ILC Being Human (3 SH)
