Women's and Gender Studies

Study the way gender is defined and the evolution of these definitions over time. You'll also explore the roles women have played in the sciences, arts, politics, religion, and other fields.

OverviewAfter PrincipiaFaculty

Gender is studied as a social construction that needs to be examined in conjunction with race and class. Culture and history also shape and inform gender roles and experiences, so our program is multidisciplinary in nature. You’ll study the obstacles affecting women’s lives and the impact of gender roles on men and women in the workplace and society at large.

Why Study Women’s and Gender Studies at Principia College?

  • Our students often help plan the College's two annual student-run conferences.
  • Our minors help organize the annual SPEAK event (Students of Principia for Education, Awareness, and Kindness), where students present poetry, music, dance, and theatre pieces to raise awareness and inspire action in support of gender equality.
  • Our 6:1 student-to-faculty ratio allows invaluable access to faculty, and we mentor students beyond graduation.
  • We prepare students to continue their education at top graduate schools.

Abroads

Principia abroad programs are open to all majors, and students are encouraged to apply for any abroad program that interests them. All abroads involve individual research that students can tailor to their interests.
