Sportsmanship Wins the Day
March 2, 2020

Corey Carter (left) during the 200 m race at the Principia Relays
At the Principia Relays, an indoor track and field meet held January 31 and February 1 in Crafton Athletic Center, two sprinters with a history of neck-and-neck competition set an example of true sportsmanship. Principia’s Corey Carter, a junior, and Greenville University’s Jeremiah Davis, a senior, expected to face off again on the Crafton Center track as they have many times before. Typically, Carter has beaten Davis in the past, but not by much. They shared the winners’ podium at the 2019 DIII Outdoor Championship with Carter in first place and Davis in third.
In the 60 m prelims at the recent Principia Relays, Davis outpaced Carter, but an injury prevented Davis from seeing whether he could sustain that momentum. In the end, however, neither Davis's injury nor his disappointment at having to drop out of competition stopped him from showing his true mettle and supporting his rival. Read KSDK’s coverage.
(The meet included competitors from NAIA and NCAA DI schools as well as Principia's usual NCAA DIII cohort. Corey placed sixth in the 200 m, with the fastest NCAA DIII time for the event.)
