Arrested and imprisoned in a death camp in her native Democratic Republic of Congo, Rose Mapendo survived brutality and starvation at the hands of her government captors. Her excruciating and inspiring experience of overcoming extreme hardship is chronicled in the documentary Pushing the Elephant.
Mapendo was named United Nations Humanitarian of the Year in 2009. Currently based in the United States, she is founder of Mapendo International, a non-profit organization that “protects and cares for at-risk and forgotten refugees in Africa.”
