Principia College Library patrons are responsible for:
Fines and fees may be paid with cash or check at the Circulation Desk. Alternately, fines and fees may be paid via the Principia Marketplace. Refunds are made when items are returned within six months of the original payment date and are in good condition. The $15 service fee is not refunded.
Exceptions to this policy may, on rare occasions, be made at the discretion of the Library Director in consultation with the Public Services Manager.
*Items not returned within 30 days of their due date are automatically marked as lost by the Voyager system. At that time the patron’s record will show the lost item charges ($50 per item) and service fees ($15 per item).
**This amount is reviewed periodically. The base price is determined by consulting the Bowker Annual as a guide to the average cost of an academic book in conjunction with reviewing best practices at other small college academic libraries. The service charge partially covers acquisition and processing costs.

When classes are canceled by the administration due to ice/snow the college library will be open (as an essential service) as per the following schedule:
Monday-Thursday – Noon to midnight
Friday – Noon to 5:00 p.m.
Saturday- Noon to 6:00 p.m.
Sunday- 1:00 p.m. to midnight
Student employees of the library will be expected to work their normally scheduled shifts. This ensures that there will be two employees in the building at all times. Students may secure a substitute if needed as per normal policy. Library faculty/staff or authorized student will be responsible for opening the building at noon or 1 p.m. depending on the day of the week. Securing the building at closing is the responsibility of the last evening shift as per our current practice. This policy will need to be renewed annually to ensure that the hours listed and assumed processes are still in force.

Borrowing Guidelines
Interlibrary loan (ILL) provides access to research materials owned by other libraries. This service is provided to current Principia College students, faculty and staff (including retired faculty and staff living in the area). A valid library account is required.
Submitting a Request
After finding relevant materials in a FirstSearch database (such as WorldCat), click on the ILL button above the citation and fill out the request form.
OR
Complete an online interlibrary loan request form for either books or articles.
Please allow at least 7-14 days for your request to be filled.
Patrons are allowed 6 academic requests per week; 5 non-academic requests per term.
Loan Periods
Photocopied articles are mailed to the user and may be kept.
Circulation time for books and other items is dependent upon the policy of the lending library and can range from 1-4 weeks. Some items may be loaned with additional restrictions, such as for use in the library only.
Renewal requests must be submitted three days before the item is due. Approval for renewal is at the discretion of the lending library. Only one renewal is allowed per item.
What Can Be Requested
Most library materials are available for loan from other libraries. Some exceptions are recently published books, reference materials, rare and special collections, phonorecords, videos, CDs, DVDs and entire volumes or issues of periodicals. Textbooks are not requested through Interlibrary Loan. ILL requests for titles owned by our library but that are currently checked out are not processed. Those requests are added to the request queue for that title.
Costs
The cost involved in borrowing interlibrary loan materials is not passed on to our patrons. Overdue fines are charged at the rate of $1.00 per day beginning the day after the material is due and continuing until the item is returned. The loaning institution sets the replacement costs and any other processing fees for lost materials. These charges are non-negotiable. Fines and/or replacement costs unpaid are charged our policies.
Notification
Photocopied articles are mailed to the user and may be kept.
Borrowers will be notified by phone or e-mail when materials arrive. Items should be picked up promptly at the circulation desk.
Copyright compliance for borrowed items is the responsibility of the patron.
