Principia's Expectations of Drivers

  1. The driver is responsible for the safe operation of the vehicle, which includes the behavior of everyone in the van.
  2. The driver will see that all passengers have their seat belts on while the vehicle is in operation.
  3. The driver will observe all traffic laws, particularly speed limits and adjust his driving to the weather and traffic conditions.
  4. The driver will always maintain a safe distance from traffic in front of you.
  5. The driver may not eat while driving.
  6. Never drive if you are tired or otherwise unfit to drive.
  7. The driver may not use a cell phone while driving. Either pull over and stop or ask your passenger to make/answer the call.
  8. Music / noise in the vehicle must not be distracting to the driver or prevent them from hearing any passenger and regulatory or emergency vehicles at any time.
  9. Upon your return, please go through the van to be sure no one's personal effects get left behind.
  10. Please clean up any trash in the van – there is a whiskbroom, dustpan, and garbage can at the van garage for your convenience. If there is any kind of spill that requires more thorough cleaning, please advise Facilities so that we can take care of it promptly.
  11. If returning after hours or on a weekend and there is 3/4 of a tank or less, please put gas in the van. The key to our gas pump can be picked up at the front gate.

Please verify which vehicle you are to take. Check the Van Schedule before coming down to pick up your van. Walk around the vehicle once, prior to departure and upon return, to check for any damage or possible tire problems. Report any and all deficiencies to Facilities or Community Safety departments immediately.

The personal use of Principia vans is not allowed because of insurance and IRS rules regulating the use of company vehicles, nor are you allowed to take a Principia van home before, during, or after a departmentally sanctioned trip.

Important: Failure to report any incidents, especially those resulting in vehicular body damage, or mechanical problems may result in the loss of van driver authorization.

If you drive to Facilities to pick up your van, please park your personal car in the spot you take the van from, or on the north side of the office, to alleviate parking problems in front of the Facilities office.

The Facilities Department and Community Safety wish you a safe and enjoyable trip! We always welcome your comments.
