Principia College is always changing and upgrading its technological facilities, and it is pleased to offer state-of-the-art computer labs, a campus-wide school network, and wireless Internet in all houses and academic buildings. This page will provide you with an overview of technology use at Principia. For more detailed information, please visit the Computer Services page

Personally Owned Computers
For those who plan to purchase and bring a personal computer, we recommend a laptop or tablet computer. These offer the benefit of portability for use in house living rooms, classrooms, the library, and other buildings. They also make the best use of desk space. Students are also welcome to bring desktop computers.

Roughly half of our students bring Apple Macintosh computers.  Most of the rest bring computers of various brands that use Microsoft Windows. Both types work well in our environment.

Principia Purchase Plans
Principia is grateful to offer purchase plans in conjunction with Apple and Dell. Dell’s discount is 7% on selected models. Apple’s discounts are variable and generally attractive.

Internet Access
The College provides free Wi-Fi networking in all dorms, classrooms, and athletic buildings, and such general spaces as Marshall Brooks Library, Howard Center, and Cox Cottage.

Although most of our students use Wi-Fi exclusively for connectivity, every dorm room has at least one wired Ethernet port. On request, the College will supply one wired Ethernet port for each bed in a dorm room.

E-mail
Principia provides each student with an e-mail box on Principia’s system and expects students to check it daily for all Principia business. Principia e-mail boxes remain available to students during breaks and from any computer with a browser and an Internet connection.

Students are welcome to continue to use non-Principia e-mail services for personal correspondence.

Personal Network Restrictions
The following types of personally owned devices are prohibited on Principia's network:

  • Wireless Access Point
  • Wireless Router (including Apple Airport Base Stations and variant products)
  • Wired Router
  • Any device that can be configured to offer DHCP service

The consumer versions of those products are built for ease of set-up at home, but provide features that can interfere with the College network, impacting both the computer user and his or her neighbors. Any individual operating such a personal network device is subject to both regulatory fines and fees for damages.

CIS Support for Student Computing
CIS maintains a Technical Support Desk. It is staffed weekdays from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm.

In addition to maintaining the network and Principia owned computers, the HelpDesk will also assist with problems on personally owned computers. Work on personally owned computers is generally billable at $50.00/hour in ¼ hour increments. Owners will be asked to purchase needed parts.

Principia College is a warranty repair station for both Apple and Dell.  Apple covers parts and labor on warranty repairs.  Dell covers parts but not labor on warranty repairs performed at Principia.

Audio/Video/Print Permissions Policy
Principia's policy is to balance sharing Principia with the worldwide Christian Science community with student privacy concerns. Many photos/images/brief audio or video recordings of Principia activities involving students and staff are taken throughout the year in order to share the Principia experiece with current and prospective students, families, donors, and others who might benefit from such glimpses.

Media published on Principia's website or printed in Principia publications does not include names unless permission has been given, except in broadcasts of Principia athletic events, such as soccer and basketball games, where permission is assumed. Student permission is also assumed when student photos/images/brief audio and video recordings are published without including names, unless a student notifies Principia to the contrary.

Except for broadcasts of athletic contests, specific permission is required for publication of video or audio recordings of an interview/speech/performance that focuses exclusively on an individual student and extends beyond 2 minutes in duration—even when the student name is not published with the video/audio recording.
