Brian Bort (C’04)
Brian double majored in political science and philosophy at Principia and went on to earn an MFA in poetry at Mills College. Besides being a poet, Brian has been a high school cross-country and track coach, and he worked for a gubernatorial campaign and the Obama presidential campaign. Brian was also part of a recent newspaper start-up in Berkeley, California. He has published two books of poetry, The Strange Fish and Gigantic Brittle, and is working on his third collection of poems titled With You in Another Way.
He offered these reflections on his years at Principia:
The uncommon practice of building relationships based on kindness and principle is the shortest way to develop the skills you will need to succeed in any vocation. When the job changes, the need for these skills does not, and Principia’s size and setting don’t allow for anonymous education; relationships are central. The purpose of education is to prepare for the unknown, so it's important to strengthen your relationship with God, with those around you, and with the particular way you learn, grow, and adapt. These are fundamental principles of Christian Science, and the atmosphere at Principia is charged with opportunities to put them into practice. Nevertheless, it will always be your own courage and dedication that bring the freedom of demonstration. I learned that at Principia.
