Student Activities

Math Club: Mu-alpha-theta is a club run by and primarily for mathematics majors, minors, and other interested students.  Its purpose is to coordinate events to promote mathematics as well as quantitative and spatial reasoning at Principia College.  These events may include luncheon seminars, dinner gatherings, and field trips.

Weekly Math Contests: Weekly sets of problems (of varying degrees of backgrounds and difficulty) will be sent to the campus community via email.  Solutions will be returned within one week from the date/time the problems were sent.  Solutions will be judged for originality, presentation, correctness, and time-submitted.  Prizes such as pub shakes and similar low-cost items will be awarded the best solution(s) each week.  The Mathematics Department will be responsible for judging the solutions.

Yearly Awards: The Mathematics Department gives yearly awards to a senior and a junior mathematics student.  It is also responsible for awarding the Lee Gerber Scholarship for Advanced Study.

“Prin also provides us with the tools to behave properly in a professional setting. In my department, a lot of professors train you on your speech. They want you to be more eloquent and clear—and succinct in the way you think.”
