The Artist as Scientist

The Artist as Scientist

If you’re considering a major in Chemistry, Physics, Engineering Science or Studio Art, try Experiments in Eccentricity! Going in circles trying to find a connection between these two subjects? Join Dr. Jeff Cornelius and Kristin Serafini for a semester of idiosyncrasy as they demonstrate how both artists and scientists think outside the box.

Both artists and scientists are in the business of making things. Together, we will develop some fundamental skills to help you make your own scientific observations and make your own art. It’s likely you will make your own mistakes and/or messes, too. But don’t be alarmed: that’s all part of the process. In fact, learning from unexpected results is something that artists and scientists do best—as many of the practicing artists and scientists who visit us during the term will confirm.

*Note: You must take this FYE program to start a major in Chemistry, Engineering Science or Physics.

CHEM 131 Fundamentals of Chemistry - Dr. Jeff Cornelius
The first step to becoming a scientist is learning to think like one. In this class we will develop observation, quantitative, and scientific skills through researching, problem-solving, and performing experiments in the chemistry laboratory. Topics include the structure of atoms, working with conversions and math ratios, models of bonding, and understanding gases, liquids, and solids. Includes weekly labs.

ARTS 102 Visual Fundamentals - Kristin Serafini
The first step to becoming an artist is developing a creative practice. This means being willing to explore unfamiliar territory. In the process of studying the basic principles of 2-D design (line, shape, color, value, and composition) we will use scientific tools (observation, research, problem-solving, and experimentation) to explore more effective ways of thinking creatively and communicating visually.

“Students here ask really great questions. I like to cultivate a class atmosphere that allows student to step outside of their preconceptions and develop an inquisitive mode to expand their thinking.”
