Career Conference

Principia’s Career Conference is a three-day professional, intensive, career-training program open to sophomores, juniors, seniors, and recent grads. It takes place on campus each year immediately following or preceeding an academic term.

Participants attend eight to ten hours of presentations, workshops, group activities, special events, and practice interviews each day. Most of the conference sessions are presented by an internationally known lecturer and consultant in the areas of education and career planning. Mock interviews are conducted by professionals in a variety of fields, including marketing, finance, and law. There’s even an interactive session on dressing for success. Watch the video above to learn more about the career conference.

Here are a few of the topics covered at the conference:

  • Graduate School—This presentation covers everything from standardized tests and application procedures, to deciding which school to attend once you know where you’ve been accepted, to how to pay for your advanced schooling.
  • Odyssey Year and Public Service Options—Explore the possibility of taking a year or two after graduation to serve others or to travel and learn in non-traditional ways.
  • Self-Directed Job Search—Learn the nuts and bolts of successful job searches, including networking, informational interviews, using the Internet effectively, utilizing the “100 leads” strategy, and more.
  • The Hidden Job Market—Find out how successful job seekers turn up incredible opportunities that never made it online or into print.
  • Dress for Success—Participate in a “fashion show” where you can model—and get feedback on—business attire for a variety of professional situations.
  • Negotiating the Best Offer—Once you’ve landed the job, you’ll need to negotiate the best offer possible, including salary, benefits, perks, and more. Find out how to bargain on your own behalf.
  • Informational Interviews—Get the inside scoop on your dream career in a one-on-one telephone informational interview with a Principia alumni or friend.
  • Mock Interviews—Practice what you’ve been learning in a videotaped interview with a visiting professional. After the interview, you’ll view the videotape with a Principia faculty or staff member who’ll provide feedback and suggestions for improvement.
  • Networking Reception—Network with leading professionals at a formal “cocktail” reception where you can put all you’ve learned (including the fashion tips) into practice.
