Sabrina Netherwood (C'20)

GLOBAL STUDIES
University of Toronto, Munk School of Global Affairs & Public Policy

Sabrina arrived at Principia College hoping to graduate within three years and with no interest in attending graduate school. But, she ended up doing both. It was a first-year global studies course that changed her mind.

Participating in the Slovenia, Croatia, and Bosnia Abroad, followed by work as an au pair in France further solidified Sabrina’s desire to study more of the world, specifically the political and security components.

She worked with her advisor—the chair of the Global Studies program—to identify strong graduate schools. Initially, Sabrina was concerned that Principia's small size would put her at a disadvantage as an applicant to such highly competitive programs. However, her advisor pointed out that Principia’s intimate academic environment was actually an extraordinary asset. Sabrina even focused on that fact in her letter of intent when applying to graduate schools.

“My advisor, and her care for me as a student, played a big role in getting me to where I am today.”

Sabrina also credits other faculty, the Career Center, and friends as part of her amazing Principia support system. She values the intimate class environment, which allowed for greater vulnerability to ask deep questions.

“Playing varsity women’s basketball at Principia allowed me to gain invaluable teamwork skills.”

In her three years at Principia, Sabrina played varsity basketball and held key positions in the Public Affairs Conference, the Phi Alpha Eta Honors Society, and on house boards.

Must-Take Course: Women in the Global Worlds, Intro to Global Studies

Favorite Prin Moment: It wasn’t like a big moment, but those moments when you got to room with your best friend—at 2 AM, laughing in the room and having a great time.

Advice for Incoming Students: There are going to be really hard moments, but think of the bigger picture. It’s so rewarding and there are so many fun moments along the way. You’re going to be so proud of yourself when you get that Principia diploma.
